To commemorate the historic Parachute Jump amusement ride at Coney Island, JZA+D designed the Parachute Pavilion for a competition sponsored by the Van Alen Institute. The design featured a horizontal element of patina’d stainless steel mesh that hangs from an exposed cantilevered structure to serve as a counterpoint to the verticality of the ride, creating a sense of balance.
The primary building is enclosed in a curtain wall system that features frosted, clear and fretted glass panels and takes a programmatic approach that allows guest not only to interact with the famed Jump, but also engage the boardwalk and other attractions.
Project completed: 02/2005.
