To capture the memory of 9/11 and the 700 New Jersey residents who lost their lives that day, JZA+D designed a cenotaph – or monument – to create a place of reflection, remembrance and return. The design features a number of components including a lightweight roof that protects interior elements; a column grove to reflect the day’s randomness;
media piers capturing the human need for connection; an etched glass rotunda to list the 700 names; a presentation wall to maintain New York’s pre-9/11 skyline; and a view pylon with slots pointing towards Washington, D.C., Shanksville, Pennsylvania and New York City.
Project completed: 04/2004.
