Built in 1968, Room 135 in Calcia Hall at Montclair State University is a lecture hall utilized by the art department and the wider campus community. The room features a raked floor, fixed seating, stage, and rear projection rooms. The lecture hall’s entrance and furnishings were worn and broken, in urgent need of a refresh, and the defunct rear projection rooms, limited accessible seating area, and non-ADA compliant grade rendered the room difficult to fully utilize.

To fully maximize the use of the space, the JZA+D design team opened up the entrance space by removing the projection rooms and enlarged the accessible seating area. The seating arrangement was reorganized from one center aisle to two side aisles. Wider fixed tablet arm seating was installed, including some designed for lefthanded users.

New carpet, acoustical ceiling and wall surfaces were installed throughout to provide noise control for this auditorium space. The refinished white walls brighten the space, while a new color palette features the University’s colors of red and white, with grey added as a neutral element.

The renovation of the lecture hall brings energy to space, creating a vibrant room now used for classes, team and club meetings, events, serving the entire Montclair community.
