Originally built in 1993 by Robert A.M. Stern, FAIA, Princeton’s Center for Jewish Life is the hub of Jewish life on campus, accommodating cultural learning, worship spaces, staff offices, and a kosher dining facility open to the wider university community. Embracing the original architecture and mission of the Center, JZA+D was brought in to renovate the building to meet the needs of Jewish students of different denominations, while also serving as a welcoming social and educational space for any and all students who might pass by.
The introduction of new interior finishes and lightweight, moveable furnishings aid in the flexibility of the CJL’s different areas. By opening the floorplan and enhancing circulation and storage, a wider variety of sociable meeting spaces are yielded.
Usable as a study space during the day and for religious gathering in the evening, the implementation of lightweight furniture in the open floorplan makes reconfiguration of high-use spaces managable.
